The Department of Medicine and Surgery is in the College of Medicine, within the Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State.
The college is attached to Madonna University Teaching Hospital (MUTH). The College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) is comprised of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (FBMS), Faculty of Clinical Medicine Surgery Service and Faculty of Allied Sciences (FMCS) and FAMS respectively.
Found under the FBMS are Department of Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Physiology. The Faculty of Clinical Medicine Science consists of the Departments of Pathology, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, Surgery and Medicine. Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychology, Radiology Ophthalmology, Urology, Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics, Ent, Dermatology, etc.
The Faculty of Health Sciences, consists of Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Department of Optometry and Department of Public Health. The curriculum for the degree of the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) shall last for a period of six years for candidates admitted with SSGE or its equivalent and five years for students admitted by direct entry.
The Philosophy of the College is to produce well-trained doctors and medical personnel, who are current and competent in the practice of medicine, practicing with compassion and expertise, guided by professional ethics and with the fear of God. The mission of MUTH is the initiation and implementation of medical programmes and other activities aimed at the provision of quality and timely health care services, with participation of the people, in the provision of these services and at a price that they can afford. MUTH is poised to increase the quality and life expectancy of Nigerians by ensuring reduction of the incidence of both communicable, non- communicable diseases, maternal mortality and morbidity rates with the aim of meeting the global target on the eradication of diseases and infirmity.
The training of doctors and health personnel is tailored towards satisfying the need of the entire southern geographical zone of the country with relevance to other parts of Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

The prescribed entry requirements for admission into the programme are as contained in the MAU general and academic regulations. All candidates must undergo post JAMB aptitude test. All candidates admitted by JAMB or direct entry are expected to possess credit in English, Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in SSCE or its equivalent.
Direct entry candidates must be holders of upper credits in diploma. 2nd class upper division in relevant B.Sc courses.
A level papers all sciences or science related courses.
