The Department of Mechanical Engineering is in the Faculty of Engineering, within the Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State.
The faculty was introduced with the sole aim of producing effective and efficient graduate engineers.
Mechanical Engineering applies basic scientific principles to the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of all forms of mechanical devices a well as to the management of the human and material resources necessary for these activities.
Courses are therefore offered to impact sound knowledge to students on the art of application of the related principles. In the first two years of the training programme, all students in Engineering take common courses, the basic sciences and engineering. The first year courses are basic subjects which are common to some departments in the university while the second year courses are foundation engineering courses designed to expose students to the fundamentals of the engineering discipline. The third and fourth years are devoted to advanced studies in Engineering Drawing, Theory of Machines, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Engineering Metallurgy, Strength of Materials, Control systems Engineering, Manufacturing Technology and workshop practices. In addition, a six-month industrial work experience scheme is provided to develop professionalism and adaptability towards industrial life. In the fifth year, more advanced courses are offered in Thermo Fluid Sciences, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanics and Industrial Engineering. Design a central activity in Mechanical Engineering features prominently in these years of study. So also are the necessary tools of Mathematics, Numerical methods and computing. Finally, an in-depth study of some aspects of Mechanical Engineering in the form of a final year experimental and/or theoretical project is undertaken by each student leading to a mandatory thesis before graduation.
On successful completion of the programme, the graduate shall be able to:
Prepare and read Engineering Drawing.
Design, manufacture and assemble engineering components and systems.
Solve engineering problems by analysis and calculations.
Install, operate, and maintain, service plant machinery, tools and equipment.
Apply management principles to solve management and organizational problems, related to any engineering set-up.

Admissions into the B.Eng. degree Mechanical Engineering are through the joint admissions and matriculation Board (JAMB) and Direct Entry.
Admissions through JAMB: Candidates should possess five (5)credit passes obtained in not more than two sittings at the senior secondary certificate examination (SSCE) or the General Certificate of Education (G.C.E).The five credit passes must include Mathematics, physics, Chemistry and English Language.
Admissions by Direct Entry: Candidates should in-addition to the requirements for admission through J.A.M.B be in possession of the Higher School Certificate or the G.C.E Advanced level passes in the relevant subjects- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry. Holders of O.N.D/ND Certificates are eligible for admission
Duration of Programme
The duration of B. Eng. Degree Mechanical Engineering is five (5) years (10 semesters) comprising both classroom lecture periods and industrial work experience periods. Nine semesters of course work are spent in the university, made up of two semesters in each year of I, II, III, V and the second semester of the year IV.
The long vacation period at the end of the third year and the first semester of year IV are spent in the industry where the student works and gains experience in research, design, manufacture and industrial processes.
