The Department of Library Information Science is in the Faculty of Social Sciences within Madonna University, Okija Campus. This degree programme is an integrated professional course offered in the department of Informational Science and Management and academic courses from other departments, usually in the Faculty of Social and Management, respectively.
This is a basic professional programme designed to prepare information manager for all information centres.
It provides for compulsory, optional and elective courses intended to meet the individual student’s interests.
The compulsory courses, which constitute the core of the programme and the optional courses, may be taken within or outside the department. But all elective courses are available outside the department of information science. The major objective is to produce information managers educated in the conceptual and technical skills and information work i.e. librarians and information professional. Well-grounded in relevant theoretical knowledge and equipped with the necessary skills and expertise. The products of this programme should be able to cope with the rapidly growing flood of information and knowledge, modern management techniques, new media and information centres at large. Moreover, the programme is intended to produce professionals with entrepreneurial skills needed to function in a private sector driven economy.
FULL TIME UME (4-YRS) DE (3-YR)
The department runs three and four-year B.L.S Degree programmes.
It admits students to the four-year degree programmes form the one remedial (preliminary) programme of the university, and from those who are successful in the University Matriculation Examination (UME conducted by JAMB, with at least five credits in WASC its equivalent, including the English Language and Mathematics.
Candidates seeking the direct entry admission must posses one of the following qualifications:
Five credits in GCE ordinary level or its equivalent, including English and Mathematics plus two advanced level passes in GCE, HSC/IJMB Examinations, or four credits at ordinary level plus three advanced level passes.
The Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).
The Diploma in Library and Information Science passed at a credit level from a recognized Tertiary Institution.
N.B: Holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education or the Diploma in Library and Information Science must have at least four credits, including the English Language in GCE Ordinary Level.
As linguistic competence is essential to effective practice of information service, especially in the areas of documentation and retrieval, selection and development of information resources and bibliographical work, and to enable the students information science and management to gain some reading knowledge of a modern foreign language of their choice, the Department of Information Science and management has stipulated a language requirement.
Two international language of scholarship (German and French) are recommended by the Department.
Except for the students who have passed any of these languages at G.C.E Ordinary Level, or the equivalent, all degree students in Information Science and management must take and pass beginners course at 100 level series and a Reading / Grammar course at 200 level series in one of the two languages.
The Department of General Studies satisfies this requirement.
This language requirement must be met before graduation.
