      SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME:

The department offers a four-year degree programme with a broad range of subjects leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Accountancy. This is designed to prepare students to take up challenging careers in both the private and public industrial and governmental financial management.

Specifically, the programme strives to develop:

    • Analytical abilities
    • Communication Skill
    • Awareness of Conflicting views
    • Perspective for dealing with evolving professional practices.

The justification for establishing the Department is the present need of our society which lays serious emphasis on prudent financial management.

    • DEPARTMENT OF BANKING AND FINANCE

It is an established fact from statistics that the Nigerian Economy is under banked. By March, 1992 there were 128 banks (Commercial 90 and Merchant 38) with a total of 624 Branch network throughout the country. With the country's population of 89 million the ratio is 142,000/persons to a Bank. Compared with the statistics in developed countries with ratio of 3,500 to a Bank in United Kingdom and 5,000 to a Bank in the United States of America, Nigeria surely must be seen to be under banked.

The experiment with Rural Banking for about 13 years in Nigeria did not help matters much since the teething problems that followed them from inception never really got solved until their formal demise a year ago.

The introduction of Peoples and Community Banks has increased the urgent need for trained manpower in this very important sector of the Economy.

In the area of services rendered at present by our Banks, the consensus is that they are not satisfactory. The usual long delays of customers at our Banks have been a constant source of embarrassment to Bank Management. The main factor contributing to these problems is the significant absence of qualified personnel.

Banking has now become very sophisticated and computerized. With our dynamic and expanding economy, more Banks, Commercial and Merchant, are being established and the need to get trained manpower for these institutions has become rather imperative.

      SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME

Banking in Madonna U. is a four-year programme leading to the award of B. Sc. degree in Banking and Finance. In the first year, the student will be required to take general studies courses that will expose him to other fields of specializations. For the remaining three years it will concentrate on banking courses.

    • DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION INTEGRATED AND MANAGEMENT

      PHILOSOPHY

Among the phases of life characterized by changes, business seems to top the list. As a way of life, "Business" can aptly be described as an activity of people working singly or in groups for the purpose of producing and selling goods and services required in any country. Providing opportunity for other satisfactions, business gives, a fine feeling in serving others, in creating jobs for the population and contributing maximally to community development and progress. From the above observation, it is obvious that any modern University without degree programmes in Business Administration is ab initio, deficient in impact.

On the national level, the government policy over the years has been emphasising a complete commitment of entrepreneurs to the establishment of private businesses and creating job opportunities for the teaming population of this country which is conspicuously being crowded with unemployed school leavers, and even University graduates. At the state and local government levels, the emphasis has not changed. The observable high rate of unemployment has been traced, in the main to ineffective preparation of our youth for self-employment during their school days. Happily, many modern Universities have determined to reverse this ugly trend by whatever means possible. Admittedly, the inclusion of Functional Business Administration programmes in their curricula has been proved to be one such means. And Madonna is squarely prepared to join the race by ensuring that her Business Administration programme will be functional and relevant to the needs of Anambra state in particular and our country in general.

To be effective in meeting the organizational demands and challenges of an uncertain future that keeps on changing socially, culturally, economically and technologically the future business administrators and managers must be people of vision, masters of mixed skills, knowledge, and attitude. Skills are intended to deal with the technical quality of one's achievement: knowledge concentrates on rather selected areas of specialization on some of theoretical/educational perspective; and attitudes challenge one's emotional and sentimental dispositions towards readiness and willingness to learn and accept changes.

The curriculum is, as expected, designed to cover an appreciable range of courses and function devoid of interdisciplinary complexion, with the theme of effective integration of specialized skills and knowledge necessary in the formulation, analysis implementation of organizational plans and goals. It is our belief that this type of integration is what is required in preparing the youth of this country for the managerial challenges of our national economy in decades to come. There is no doubt, therefore, that when the Department of Business Administration in Madonna. is fully functional, it will create such a momentum and synergistic impact that will not be easy to parallel in Nigeria in particular, and Africa as a whole.

It is our belief that the graduate of Business Administration from Madonna will rank among the best management personnel to handle the economic and social development programmes of this country.

      METHODOLOGY

To achieve that goal of producing all-round managers, the department will not limit itself to one method of imparting knowledge to the students. Classroom lectures shall be complemented with on-the job experience in the numerous organizations available to us, industrial tours films and close circuit lectures workshop, case studies, addresses by guest lecturers, seminars and symposia.

As the world changes, so will we also vary our method to reflect the circumstances.

      THE PROGRAMME

The department will run a four-year programme leading to award of a B.Sc. degree for those admitted through JAMB, and a three-year programme for direct entry students. As the University grows, it will be possible to mount post-graduate programmes. In all cases, we will follow the government regulations and guidelines governing operations in tertiary institutions as enunciated at any given time.

Apart from Bachelors Degree there will be MBA and Ph.D. degree programmes.

    • DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

      PHILOSOPHY

It would be wrong to emphasis the department of Business Administration, or any other department for that mater, to the exclusion of Public Administration. The present trend of events in the world in general, and in the developing countries like ours in particular, calls for well groomed, committed and dedicated crop of public administrators. This is quite significant when we critically assess the magnitude of mismanagement and maladministration that have persistently frustrated any of the well-conceived government Projects and programmes for quite a number of years since Nigeria celebrated her independence. The need for qualified and competent public administrators is inexpressibly dire in all sectors of economy - in government departments, ministries, and parastatals, profit and non-profit organizations private establishments, financial institutions, manufacturing organizations. etc.

Public administrators, are always needed as leaders trained to rationally define and analyze national problems, pose solutions, re-arrange priorities, set goals and objectives, and develop logical strategies for achieving the set goals and objectives.

      Objectives

The department of Public Administration is established and designed to inculcate in the students the capability to develop and coordinate relevant programmes and, above all, execute and implement approved policies within the constraints of human and material resources available in the economy. This is to be achieved by means of analytical study, effective teaching and programmatic or scientific research in Administrative practices and policies in both the private and public sectors of the Nigerian-economy and the world over.

      THE PROGRAMME

This department will initially offer a four-year degree programme in Public Administration with a broad range of inter-disciplinary subjects leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science (B.Se) Degree.

In a nutshell, this programme at its undergraduate level is designed, among other things, to:

      (1)     Prepare the students and graduates for administrative and managerial positions in our fast changing complex organisations.

      (2)      Provide a broad fundamental preparation for leadership and administrative responsibilities.

      (3)      Provide specialized educational opportunities and preparation for career positions in special areas of administration, such as local government administration, hospital administration, international relations police department, etc.

      (4)      Develop communicative skills and analytical abilities required in organizations.

      (5)     Explore in all ramifications, through education, workshops and research, the contents, and interdependence of disciplines and institutions in the public and private sectors, both nationally and internationally.

      (6)     Groom the graduands in the mechanics of policy formulation in the various institutions e.g health organization, community or political establishments, philanthropic and/or educational systems, public utilities etc.

      THE FUTURE

As is the case with any other programme, the Public Administration Department will be expanded to train people for higher or advanced qualifications as time progresses and the need arises. Admission, of course, will be governed by the national policies on higher education.

    • DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING / PUBLISHING AND SUPPLY

      PHILOSOPHY AND JUSTIFICATION

Experience has shown that without Marketing, no business can thrive. Business here refers to both profit and non-profit organisation. Marketing makes it possible for exchange of goods and services. Whether it is a manufacturing business, Insurance, Church system, Laundry, etc, the story is the same. Since nobody is self-sufficient, exchange of goods and services must always prevail in every society. This implies that marketing is at the centre of human existence and becomes the ultimate goal of all business activities.

As an academic discipline, marketing involves identifying the needs of the consumer and ensuring that these needs are fulfilled at the right time, in the right quantity, at the right place and at the right price or cost. Accordingly, marketing occupies a premier position in human interactions.

History confirms that marketing was known even in antiquity. The primitive man had no monetary system for commercial transactions. He, therefore, had to exchange goods for goods, goods for services. In the free market-economic system practiced today, it is a fact that the success of all national and international business organisations is a function of how well the marketing system operates.

As a developing country, Nigeria needs a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of marketing, its techniques and practices. We are indeed fortunate to live in an age when it is quite possible to achieve this goal through an all-round system of education as practiced in modern Universities. A well-developed University, academic programme in Marketing, Purchasing and Supply will enable our potential managers to gain absolute control and mastery of the micro-as well as the macro-environmental and socio-political factors that impede or facilitate progress and development. Hence the Department of Marketing, Purchasing and Supply offered at Madonna University will be of great help to the Nigerian developing society.

      THE PROGRAMMES

We intend to mount initially a 4-year B. Sc programme for students admitted through JAMB, and a 3-year programme for direct entry students. Two options will be offered in this programme, namely, B.Sc. in either Marketing or Purchasing and Supply. Post-graduate programmes will eventually be developed in due course, leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D.
