The Faculty of Medicine had initial student intake of 18 when it was established in 1999. Professor M.C. Mbanwusi was the pioneer Dean. He was succeeded at various times by Professor Agbia and Associate Prof. P.J.C. Nwosu. The current Dean of the Faculty is Associate Prof. A.E. Anya. The Faculty since its inception has continued to witness progressive increase in staff strength, improved facilities, student enrolment and graduate output. It has produced a total of 106 medical graduates: 17 in 2009; 43 in 2010 and 56 in 2011.

The faculty has a number of departments and subcomponents. The department of Community medicine and primary health care is headed by Dr. K.M. Kalu. The department of Internal medicine is headed by Dr. L.U. Dim. The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is headed by Dr. O. Adewale. Dr Joseph S. Orisakwe heads the department of Paediatrics. Dr. Chituru is incharge of the department of Chemy. Professor O.K. Obunge is the head of Medical Microbiology. Professor S.O. Nwosu is the head of Anatomical Pathology. Dr. Iheanacho is the head of Haematology. Mr. J.C. Enye is the head, department of Pharmacology while Professor E.C. Onyedinmma is the current head of the department of Surgery. The curricula or the academic programmmes for our medical students are four dimensional: The Pre-professional curriculum; the Basic Medical science curriculum, Pathological Sciences curriculum and the Clinical curriculum. The programmes directly under the Faculty of Medicine are those of the departments comprising Pathological sciences: Anatomical pathology; Chemical pathology, medical microbiology Haematology/Immunology and the department of Pharmacology. The others are those in the clinical departments. Our staff strength and student population do not therefore take into account those in the faculty of Basic Medical science and in the faculty of science. For accreditation exercises the Faculties of science and Basic Medical sciences account for both the staff and medical students in those faculties. In other words our staff strength and medical student population do not include them. The Madonna University is located in Nigeria and therefore has its own share of the bitter pills arising from inadequate number of academic staff in the nation. However the Faculty in its quest for academic excellence has collaborative engagements with the University of Nigeria Nsukka, the Federal Medical Centre Owerri. Our students visit those establishments for clinical exposure and forward or bedside lectures etc. We have augmented this effort by having on our list names of part time and adjunct staff recruited to complement teaching, research and service as approved by the National Universities Commission. Additionally the University has a Memorandum of Understanding with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana for staff and student exchange programmes.

 

  PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy The general philosophy of the faculty is to provide a sound scientific and professional basis for the production of doctors who would be capable of working not just in the country but outside the country.

  OBJECTIVES

General Objective

The overall objective of the faculty is to prepare students for a career in all spheres of medicine: - academic, research, general and specialist patient care, and administration. However each of the constituent units or departments comprising the faculty has specific objectives as evidenced by the courses it offers leading to the award of the MBBS degrees.

Departmental Objectives

Department of Pathological Sciences It is a shared fact of knowledge that the practice of medicine is both an art and a science and that its science lies in the laboratory. The objective of departments comprising the sub department of Pathological Sciences is to provide a sound and solid scientific foundation for medical students for clinical practice. The programmes in Pathological Sciences ie Medical Microbiology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology/Immunology and Morbid Anatomy provide students with the needed knowledge of the pathological basis of disease and pathophysiology of common disease state. Additionally it aims at providing knowledge for laboratory tests and to suggest the correct management of disease states following laboratory findings etc.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY

The department of Pharmacology on the hand aims essentially to provide students with the knowledge to understand the properties of drugs and thus be able to select drugs rationally for any form of ailment.

DEPARTMENT OF INTERNAL MEDICINE

The objective of Interna​l Medicine is to train students in all spheres of internal medicine with stress on local medical problems and to arm medical students with standard clinical methods in examining patients and at same time be able to recognize certain diseases etc.

DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRICS

The objectives of department of Paediatrics include exposing medical students to principles and practice of Paediatrics and child health and to provide with needed technical skills, knowledge and clinical judgment that would enable them achieve competence in the practice of Paediatrics.

DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY,

The objectives of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology among others are the provision of appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for the recognition of the principles and practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and be able to:

  •  Examine clinically all gynaecological and obstetrics cases

  •  Describe common gynaecological diseases that affect female genital system;

  •  Manage common gynaecological conditions;

  •  Understand the principles and practice of ante-natal care

  •  Identify high risks obstetrics problems

  •  Manage normal and abnormal deliveries etc

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE AND PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

The objectives of the department of Community Medicine and Public health care are aimed at providing medical students with appropriate knowledge and skills required to:

  •  Carry out epidemiological studies and identify the existing health problems in the community and to work out means of alleviating the problems

  •  Organize and evaluate appropriate health programmes;

  •  Diagnose the health problems of a defined community; and develop a primary health care plan for the defined community

  •  Deliver the eight (8) component services of Primary health care

   SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME

The scope and content of the programme are such that the medical graduates will be competent to either practice on their own or undertake postgraduate training. The scope and the content of the programme will also equip them to be conversant with standard clinical methods for the assessment of patients, be able to analyse all available data and use them to constitute an appropriate plan of action.

  JOB OPPORTUNITY

Successful graduates of MBBS degree programme are well equipped (after Houseman-ship) for careers in hospitals, private practice, administration, teaching and research activities in universities or research establishments. Graduates of the MBBS degree programme are also equipped for higher degree programmes.

  TERMINAL DEGREE

       At the end of the 6-year programme, the successful medical student will earn the degree of MB, BS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and after a period of internship he or she will be eligible to practice as a medical doctor. The single professional degree in medicine is therefore achieved through the joint offerings of the constituent Departments in the Faculty.

  ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates who gain admission through the entrance examination will spend the maximum period of 6 years direct entrants can complete the programme in five years.

Entrance examination candidates are required to have at least five credits in the SSCE or GCE O/Level obtained in not more than two sittings. These should include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A relevant pass in the JME is also required.

Direct entrants should, in addition to the above requirements, have advanced level passes in three subjects namely, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Zoology in one attempt.
